About

I am a photographer specializing in atmospheric emotional landscapes, evocative abstracts, and contemplative still life compositions. Currently studying transitional environments, layered light, reflections, and depth over breadth. I work comfortably with natural light and studio lighting, using both digital and film formats.

A childhood spent outdoors on the Northern California coast has strongly influenced my interest in natural scenes and textural details. I was introduced to film photography at a very young age and learned the basics of technique and tonality with black and white film. Expanding my skills with colour slide film informed my love of strong colours and contrast. As I began to experiment with digital photography these stylistic preferences remained.

Coming from the pre-digital era I find that photography in print offers a more engaging experience than can be had online. I carefully select papers and materials that are able to bring emphasis and depth to my images, creating an immersive individual experience when viewed in person.

Influences & Inspiration

My love of abstract compositions is strongly influenced by the paintings of Georgia O’Keefe, the light experiments of Carlotta Corpron, still life photos by Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston, and the ephemeral land art sculptures of Andy Goldsworthy.

The dramatic contrasts and atmospheric details of Laura Gilpin and Ansel Adams landscape photographs were an early inspiration as I learned to work with black and white film. The scale and unsettling compositional weight of Edward Burtynsky’s images later informed my interest in conveying a nuanced sense of place and story.

The luminous monochrome photographs of Ruth Bernhard have inspired my love of simple lighting used to create surreal, sculptural effects. The playful artworks of Olafur Eliasson have influenced my explorations of layered light, reflections, form and colour. The mystical moodiness of Julia Margaret Cameron’s portraits,

I am also an avid reader and I love movies. I’m drawn to a wide range of subjects and styles, but always with a soft spot for stories that tend toward questions of an existential nature.
